If you're a fan there's an issue with some brands and you're going to want to pull that box out right now and check one particular item on the nutrition label. Granola, nut, oat, raisins. Healthy. Nutrients. It's all good stuff in there, right? Reporter: But for these three brands of granola the serving size is just a quarter of a cup and that's an issue to illustrate we offer free breakfast. Pick any one of these three and serve yourself what you would normally eat for breakfast. After they pour, I measure. It's 420 calories. Yikes. 18 grams of fat and 21 grams of sugar. That's like your Normal portion. I probably eat more. That's just over a cup. 560 calories. Wow. 24 grams of fat and 28 grams of sugar. In fact, comparing the calories fat and sugar of these servings a surprising equivalent. That's almost as much as a quarter pounder and a half a coke. Well, he's not eat that. Reporter: People just didn't realize how small the serving size was. Does that look like enough for you. No. Right. Starving in the morning. Reporter: Of the 12 people we talked to only one read the serving size and poured out the correct portion. My son is type one diabetic. The American heart association recommends women consume no more than 24 grams of sugar. Men, 36 grams of sugar each day. Reporter: Which poses a problem as this woman's portion netted her 17 grams of sugar. That's not good. Reporter: Now not all granola brands are this camry dense. We reefed out to all three granolamakers, nature's path said we adhere to the fda mandated 30 gram serving side for all grain based snack mixes. Bear naked says it also follows the fda's regulations and while a quarter cup may not take up a lot of space on your plate it still offers nutrients and whole foods. Boulder brands says it uses the fda's guidelines so consumers can make informed buying choices and compare products easily. Bottom line for those of us koupsing our sugar and fat intake and we probably all should be granola is best thought of as a condiment. A bowl. The big hulking one we dug in as kids. It's great to have something crunchy in the morning. What do you recommend? A lot of people said they eat granola with their yogurt and they like to change the texture. I do. So here we go. This is my special. You've got your fresher frozen blueberries yogurt and then grape-nuts. Just an eighth of a cup and that really keeps the added sugar down and you can see it gives you a good crunch. Really good crunch. Of the whole week what was your favorite? The things I realized as best substitutes. Go old school. You've got -- coconut and banana with oatmeal. Cheerio, just 100 calories and then go savory. Turkey bacon with eggs or egg whites and the tortilla. Around the world -- A lot of good protein. Tons and people eat savory around the world for breakfast.
