The weekend box office could be a blowout. So many holiday black blockbusters this season. Chris connelly with a look at what's hot and what's not? Reporter: How do you like yours -- from iron to steel. Box office metal's been on display lately. You okay? Reporter: And not just by superheros. You really should announce your weapons after you fire them. Reporter: This fourth of july weekend witnesses "despicable me 2," and "the lone ranger," heading into a sean that's already been steeped in steam. Go. Reporter: Sidekicks. He's doing all the work. I'm his assistant. You're standing there, looking li an idiot. Time for a celebration. Reporter: And a couple of big-screen pairings have underperformed. This is not training. What's happening? Reporter: Overall vibe has been upbeat at the nation's movie theaters, where a welcome variety of blockbusters seems to be satisfying audiences. Hollywood has served up its stars hot. If nothing is to your liking, I'm change it. It's perfect. Reporter: Or just a little crazy from the heat. Last week it was about the mobsters, "world war z." How about "the heat"? Sandra bullock and melissa McCARTHY USING HER CHARM. She's so obnoxious in this movie. They're already talking about a sequel. How about "despicable me 2" and "lone ranger." There's a disparity. "Despicable me 2" really hilarious. They've got the cute, little yellow minions running around. Awfully funny. And watch this movie. Two weeks ago, it was going to be ail pacino playing the villain. He was replaced by benjamin bratt. Check that out while enjoying it. "Lone ranger." This is a johnny depp movie. All of the hilarities are reversed, the good guys and the bad guys. And there's four or five or six or seven weird moments. I go to movies for weird moments. I like weird moments. I thought it was a lot of fun. I'm so relieved to see a movie where earth is not under attack in the last 20 minutes. I thought it was fantastic. I thought they were amazing. We saw superman. We were talking about this in the break. Is there action fatigue? It feels like everything is destroying the world. "White house down" didn't have such a good weekend. As long as people liking seeing boom boom, they'll have a good time. If you want to see things destroyed, they destroy everything in that channing tatum movie. And "man of steel" and lots of others. There's offbeat movies that are fun to see. Like "20 feet from stardom." Have you seen that? I can't get in. There you go. Wear a tie. It helps. It's all about the backup SINGERS IN THE '60s, '70s, '80s. Remember the days before autotune? I do. And it's a great one. Amazing stories of how they were this close to being stars. The anti-summer blockbuster. And wow. Thank you so much. Thank you.
