I am not perfect. Lord knows, I am not perfect. But I will always speak with decency and moral clarity. And treat all people with dignity and respect. Senator kamala Harris, the 55-year-old stepmother and wife. The daughter of immigrants, a Jamaican father and Indian mother, who, as her guiding force growing up in the California bay area. Our mother was fierce in her belief that you will be judged based on your actions, not your our mother also was all of five feet tall, but if you ever met her, you would probably have thought she was seven to ten feet tall. Senator Harris worked her way up the political chain. First as deputy district attorney in Oakland, prosecuting gang violence, drug trafficking and sexual abuse. She became the first woman in San Francisco's history to become district attorney, then attorney general of California, the first woman and first person of color to hold that post. She would face criticism over her stance on police prosecutions, but a star continued to rise in the democratic party, easily winning her race for U.S. Senate in 2016. Do you some solemnly swear -- The prosecutor became more widely known when some of her moments during senate hearings went viral, including during the hearings of Brett Kavanaugh. Can you think of any laws that give government the power to make decisions about the male body? I'm happy to answer a more specific question. Male versus female. There are medical procedures. Her fierce grilling deployed again during the Mueller investigation. Attorney general Barr, has the president or anyone at the white house ever asked or suggested that you open an investigation of anyone? I wouldn't, I wouldn't -- Yes or no? Could you repeat that question? As a democratic candidate for president herself last year, her fiery debate style often flattening her competitors. America does not want to witness a food fight. They want to know how we're going to put food on their table. Reserving some of her harshest criticism for Joe Biden, confronting hem for his ability to work with anyone, even segregationist senators. It was hurtful to hear you talk about the reputations of two United States senators who built their reputations and career on the segregation of race in this country. She went on to attack Biden's past position on school busing. There was a little girl in California, who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools. And she was bussed to school every day. And that little girl was me. Her ability to get tough with Biden garnered headlines throughout the veep stakes process. I'm going to have a choice in the first week in August. As speculation mounted about who would be his running mate, Biden was seen at a press conference with notes showing Harris' name and the talking points "Do not hold grudges". It began with Biden's son beau. The two served as attorneys general at the same time before he died of brain cancer. I will always feel and, strongly, about the greatness of who beau Biden was. And I got to know Joe in large part through beau's relationship with his father. Biden acknowledging his son's bond with his vp pick in his announcement, saying she worked closely with beau. I was proud then, and I'm proud now to have her as my partner in this campaign. Three months after dropping out of the presidential race, Harris threw her support behind Biden. I have decided that I am with great enthusiasm going to endorse Joe Biden for president of the United States. I introduce the next president -- She began appearing at fundraisers for Biden, including his last major event before the pandemic altered the campaign. I view myself as a bridge, not as anything else. There's an entire generation of leaders you saw standing behind me. They are the future of this country. One of those future leaders now his running mate. Trump wasted no time as categorizing Harris as nasty. She was probably nastier than even pocahontas to Joe Biden. The women reported to be her competition throwing their support behind her. Senator Elizabeth Warren tweeting throughout her career, she has been unafraid. Susan rice calling her a tenacious and trailblazing leader, and from Val demings, a powerful reflection saying, to see a black woman nominated for the first time reaffirms my faith that in America, there is a place for every person to succeed, no matter who they are or where they come from. And now on the state of strategy. Will this groundbreaking choice carry Joe Biden to the white house? Earlier tonight I spoke to ABC news contributor, Yvette Simpson and Sarah Fagen. Thanks for joining us. This is a historic pick, certainly, but first, do the math for me. Where and how does kamala Harris help Joe Biden win the presidency? Where does she not help him? I feel like he really is the compliment to Joe Biden. One, because she is strong, powerful, smart. She is ready to serve on day one. She has the kind of energy he doesn't. You think about the way she commands herself in senate hearing, the way she takes it to the trump administration. Joe Biden cannot do it the way she does it. As a Republican, how concerned should the president be about a biden-harris ticket? I think kamala Harris was a very safe choice. I think she is qualified for the position. But this is really a race about Donald Trump and Joe Biden. Yvette, will kamala Harris satisfy Progressives and energize black voters? One of the challenges recently was criminal justice reform. And she's spoken out about breonna Taylor and George Floyd. For a lot of the Progressive left she's been there for a lot of the issues that matter for us. For the black community, I've already seen it all over social media, how excited, you know, she went to Howard, hbcu folks are excited, aka, black Greeks are excited. And a lot of black women who were worried about this choice are motivated. It was a safe choice, but the best choice for him at this stage. Sarah, what vulnerabilities does kamala Harris have that you think that the trump team will seek to exploit? I think there's a couple that jump to mind. The first as Yvette pointed out, her criminal justice record. Will the democratic base stick with her? The second thing is she did not run a very good campaign. Some nights she had great debate performances. Other nights she did not do so well. So I would not assume that she's going to school Mike pence. He's been a very, very good debater. And, you know, she has been What do you make of that pence-harris debate? Mike pence has no shot. I mean, you see the way she handled bill Barr. She is not afraid. He should be very worried. I have my popcorn and my wine, I am ready for the big event. She's going to obliterate him, and it's going to be a beautiful day. Thank you both so much. Thank you for your time. We'll see you down the road.
