We're. Here in Williamsburg today to deal with a very serious situation this. Is. There at the center. A measles outbreak. That is. A very very troubling and must be dealt with immediately. Message today for all New Yorkers is to take measles seriously this outbreak has been spreading her almost 300. Cases already. Overwhelmingly in Brooklyn. And to give view a sense of what. Troubling development us is it's a huge spike we saw only two cases. In New York City and 2017. So we have a very serious situation on our hands. We cannot allow this dangerous disease to make a comeback here in New York City we have to stop it now. Today we are declaring a public health emergency. Effective immediately. The sole mandate for vaccines. For people living in the affected area. Department of health will issue violations. And fines to people who remain unvaccinated. The only way to stop this outbreak. Is to ensure. That those who have not been back snake get the vaccine. It's a crucial for people understand the measles vaccine. Works it is safe it is effective it is time tested. I want to thank. The folks who every day go out into our communities. To reach out to every day New Yorkers have let them know. Both about the dangers they face but also how they can protect themselves and their families. Our Health Department employees here behind me thank you all for the work you do the outreach to do we appreciate you. And we're gonna need your help in these next days to stop this outbreak.
