And next tonight, our real money team is back to help you plan a last-minute summer vacation and save hundreds of dollars. Families booking trips in the final two weeks before labor day. Did you know that you can accept a kind of spy mission and relax at the same time? ABC's Paula Faris shows you how to put money in your pocket. Reporter: Rebecca, Mike and 2-year-old Veronica are about to go on summer vacation for practically free. We're here to check in. Reporter: How? They're mystery shoppers, as many as 1 million of them in America right now. Sent in by companies to make sure everything is running smoothly. If I wasn't mystery shopping, I don't even know how we would pay full price for these things. Reporter: Free newspapers for guests. 24-hour business and fitness centers. They all check out. But the pillows in the lob bi -- messy. This is what you don't like right here? Reporter: And there's sand all over the carpet steps. Everything gets documented on this score sheet. Reporter: So far, what would you say about this experience? I would say that the service is friendly. Maybe a little bit slow. Reporter: Upstairs, the ice machine looks good, but the vending machine is out of order. Here's our room. Reporter: Inside -- Now, I'm going to go ahead and inspect the linens here. Reporter: That's where Rebecca finds a tiny stain. In the bathroom, testing the hair dryer. In the end, the family givens the hotel a thumb's up. They say they'll do about 150 mystery shops this year, saving their family about $5,000 in expenses they would have bought anyway. David Lipton, president of a mystery shopping company, says be wary of companies asking you to pay them money up front. The most successful mystery shoppers are the ones who are reliable, responsible, they have a keen eye for detail.
