We turn to the deadly police shootout and troubling new questions tonight. Police in Providence were after a suspect chasing a pickup killing the driver, injuring a woman passenger. Now we have learned the suspect they were after was not in that truck. ABC's gio Benitez on the police defending their actions. Reporter: Tonight, an investigation underway after this shocking police involved shooting on a busy highway. Police in Providence, Rhode Island say it started when a man stole a police car with a gun inside. Police later got a tip that the suspect had hopped into a white pickup truck. So when they spotted this white pickup, they tried to stop the driver but he refused. Not knowing that driver inside was not the suspect, but he would not pull over either. They begin pursuit. Traffic cameras shows the truck weaving up I-95, cutting off drivers, a swarm of squad cars right behind driving at high speeds. Reporter: Finally unable to go any further in heavy traffic but then he starts ramming cars in an attempt to get away, repeatedly slamming into the car in front of him and the driver inside. This vehicle is now being used as a weapon. Reporter: That's when, as you can see on this body cam video, police open fire. Killing the driver, 32 year old Joseph Santos, and wounding a female passenger. An officer pulling that driver he slammed into to safety. Police tonight defending the response. Even though the man inside was not the original suspect. We believe that footage shows the acts of the officers as doing exactly what we would want them to do stopping. Reporter: The man they say stole that police cruiser is still on the run.
