Next to a terrifying shootout in Florida. An armed carjacking suspect leading police on a long chase through volusia county. The deadly exchange of gunfire that followed all caught on police bodycam. ABC's Diane Macedo picks up the story. Reporter: It's about as close as a close call can get. Watch as the hat on this Florida deputy gets knocked off his head -- by a bullet. Police bodycam captured the terrifying shootout. I've been hit. You okay? Yeah. I got hit in the head with a round. With what? With a bullet. Reporter: This all unfolding after the suspect, Phillip marsh, allegedly carjacked this white truck from a woman at gunpoint in volusia county. 911, where is the emergency? Yeah. Somebody come and, uh -- with a gun to my house and stole my car. Reporter: Chopper video shows police in hot pursuit Thursday as the suspect speeds down the highway, at one point even swerving toward a deputy, hitting a spike strip instead. I got a hit. I got a hit. Reporter: After hitting another one, the suspect appears to stick a gun out the window. That's a gun he's aiming at us. Reporter: With the truck falling apart, he finally jumps out, holding a gun to his head. He dodges a police vehicle, then opens fire on the officers while running into the woods, hitting sergeant Tom Dane. The suspect, shot several times, later died at the hospital. Sergeant Dane was treated for a graze wound and released. The bullet enters the bottom of his hat, strikes him in his skull and then comes out the top of the hat. A millimeter lower and sergeant Dane is dead. Reporter: And now has this reminder of how dangerous the job can be. The five officers who fired their weapons are on administrative leave while the incident is investigated. But the sheriff is commending their actions and Tom, he says he is very thankful sergeant Dane will be back to work very soon. Incredible how close that bullet came. All right, Diane. Thank you.
