Transcript for Biggest Oscars moments: Jimmy Kimmel takes on #MeToo, politics
On Friday we wondered whether host Jimmy Kimmel would do material on the time's up movement at the oscars and apparently it was fair game. Watch. Oscar is the most beloved and respected man in Hollywood and there's a good reason why. Just look at him. He keeps his hands where you could see them. Never says a rude word. And most importantly, no penis at all. If we can work together to stop sexual harassment in the workplace, if we can do that, women will only have to deal with harassment all the time at every other place they go. So what do you think? They were funny. It worked. I mean I know you were saying that maybe it was too soon and I'm of the belief that it's really never too soon. I don't think it's too soon. I think people misinterpret the joke sometimes because it's on the perpetrator and take it as a joke on the victim and that's where you run into the muddy waters. I'm of the belief that it's never too soon because change is always uncomfortable, talking about things may be uncomfortable and in those moments that's when you actually talk about it. It was like the elephant in the room. He had to say something. Humor is not just to be funny. It sends a message, satire, humor, this kind of joke is supposed to be funny by also sending a message. That's what he did. He had to approach the subject matter. It's been very intense in Hollywood in particular for months and months and months. I think it was fine. I think he did a great job. What about the politics Meghan? Jokes against trump, against fox. I think I'm the Debbie downer on this show. I really tried to watch because I promised you I would try and watch. It's like I think this show is -- I just want to know do you care about trump supporters watching? If you're like screw trump supporters they don't need to watch, great. But I thought the Mike pence stuff, Fox News, whatever, maybe I'm extra sensitive. Maybe I'm a tone millennial but it all feels political and anti-Trump and anti-republican. We know Hollywood is filled with liberals. It would be nice if we could take a beat on politics. We're all so ensconced with it. It's impossible with trump in the white house. He's too hilarious. I agree. I actually was watching for more trump jokes, more NRA messages, more of that stuff. You know, I can't stand trump. I was actually disappointed. So I think a lot of people even before the oscars began were already talking about how insufferable the oscars were going to be because there were going to be so political. A lot of preamble. First of all, if you don't want to listen, watch something else. But I found it -- Which I didn't. It kind of let me down. I see. I wanted more trump jokes. I wanted more. And as you're watching it I agree. It's a whole host of things. I just don't -- Meghan watched like half an hour. I made it to the pence joke ani was like all right. The Kardashians are on. Was Harvey Weinstein in the memoriam segment? No. Too soon. Too soon? No. Not too soon. Let me ask you one question. Don't you think they can still be a trump supporter or like him and still think it's funny to make fun of him because he really is hilarious? I agree there are things about trump that are hilarious. Worthy of satire. The problem is when it just feels so -- it's so much all the time. I got it. I know exactly where our comedians for the most part stand politically but I was talking with our executive producer and it's a lose/lose situation for comedians. Jimmy Fallon gets hit and Jimmy Kimmel getting hit. Thank god I'm not a comedian. I didn't like the jokes, fox joke, I'm 33. The joke was fox viewers were 90 years old. Couple of age jokes. Christopher plummer constantly referring to the fact he's old and the old people that watch fox. It's off limits to do race jokes and female sexist jokes, even fat jokes, even fat jokes currently are gone. I mean with Christie out of the office. Actually there are three jokes. It was reported at a mar-a-lago fundraiser for trump donors, Giuliani made a fat joke against Hillary. Mind you he's raising funds for trump. Eating something green is not an m&m in 60 years. I just authority of made a sneaky fat joke against Chris Christie. But you can do them against men like him who are deplorable. They are. The old jokes, got a little tired. They did that. But is that wrong, too? I didn't care for the whole Christopher plummer thing. He stepped in for Kevin spacey. He's a legend and did an incredible job in the film. I think he's over 80. 87. And he looks great and they panned in to look at his face. And they had a lot of old people there, in their 80s. Even Marie -- she's 94. He was 88. Christopher plummer. If you're laughing and it's really funny then your less offended. We all get old. I don't see why -- I mean, Jane fonda looked immaculate. Moreno was wearing the same dress she wore in 1962. I can't fit into a dress I wore 56 days ago and this woman is in a dress from then. Helen mirren looked wonderful. Faye Dunaway. Faye Dunaway. Yeah. I mean, I love the Tiffany haddish and Maya Rudolph bit. I think because of the Oscar so white movement people felt there was an overcorrection and the oscars were going to be blackified. They weren't. Jord Jordan Peele won for original screen play in the 90 year history of the oscars. So I think it was -- There were only six women won oscars and 33 men. Still a long way to go. We haven't overcorrected anything. She only watched the first half. I only watched the second half. I thought there was a lot of diversity. Coco won twice. The best director. Guillermo del toro. The fourth time in five years that a Mexican wins. No Donald Trump. Criminals are really good artists. We're talking to whoopi live
