Transcript for These high-tech school buses can contact trace students
As some students begin to head back to school there are big concerns about the safety of being on school buses so one company has presented a solution. Calamp created a product called the bus guardian, a way to contact trace students and drivers on school buses and here to tell us more about is product director at calamp and bus guardian, Brad bishop. Thank you for being with us. We should point that the company has had 20 years of experience with school bus technology. Tell us in what ways the bus guardian was being used before covid-19. Thank you. To share or passion about school bus safety and bus guardian. Pre-covid, pre-pandemic, we asked ourselves why can we track pizzas, packages, everything to our doorstep, but we don't know which kids are getting on and off buses. And if you have kids, you want to know your kid is on that bus, is safe and is being delivered on time. Pre-covid, this technology already existed, we just adapted it for this new era. You're using that same technology for contact tracing of students and bus drivers, so tell us how it works. Sure, so contact tracing is extremely important as you know, as the CDC has recommended social distancing, we want to make sure that kids are separated as much as they can be. But we know kids? Right, contact tracing is great, scan on and off the bus. The student does the same thing with their student I.D., should a kid immediately becomes ill, we would know who got on before, after and who else was on that bus. Wow, what happens next if a student or a driver tests positive for covid, how do you then go about contacting the kids near that person? That's a great question. Ultimately that comes down to the school district's policies and procedures. Our job with bus guardian is to make sure the schools have the information they need and from there it's up to the district to disseminate that to the parents. So this technology pretty remarkable given the times we're living in, I imagine you've seen an uptick in sales in schools buying this technology. Yeah, that's a fair statement. So I guess unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, we do have the technology to help. Schools are adopting this in a much faster pace than in the past. And just overall, leave us with this, why is something like the bus guardian so important in your opinion for all schools to have? Yeah, great question. So, we've doing this about 20 years. Number one rule of thumb in school transportation is safety. Anything we can do to help keep kids and drivers safe, and communicate with parents, that's the goal. Yeah, it's never been more important than now. Brad, thank you. You're welcome. Thanks for having me. Coming up next when we come back -- this middle school in the south named for a
