Transcript for American hostage released in Afghanistan after 3 years in captivity
Right now we want to get to breaking news. That American hostage just released in Afghanistan after three years in captivity. Our chief political affairs anchor Martha Raddatz is here. Good morning. Good morning, George. The American Kevin king and Australian Timothy Weekes were turned over by the Taliban to an elite team of U.S. Special operations forces in eastern Afghanistan. King and Weekes were college professors in kabul when they were taken hostage by the Taliban more than three years ago. The king family said in a statement that Kevin is now with U.S. Officials receiving medical care and other support as he prepares to return to the U.S. The three Taliban leaders belong to the haqqani network, a Taliban group responsible for high-profile suicide bombings including the Serena hotel and Indian embassy. Today's swap could restart stalled peace talks between the two that the trump administration hopes could eventually bring home all of 13,000 U.S. Troops in Afghanistan.
