Transcript for Obama Takes Case for Syria Strike Overseas
Now, to president obama, landing just a few hours ago in stockholm, taking his case to strike syria overseas, after a full-court press on congress. The first votes on authorizing force could take place as early as today. And abc's martha raddatz has all the latest from washington. Good morning, martha. Reporter: Good morning, george. This morning, while the president tries to build an international coalition to support an air strike on syria, there is progress here at home, with key senators agreeing on the wording of a resolution that could come to a vote in committee today. The resolution drafted overnight would allow the president to use military force but with specific limbation limitations. With a 60-daytime limit with a possible 30-day extension. What appears to be a bipartisan deal comes after the national security team made a vigorous argument on capitol hill, facing equally vigorous opposition. If the united states of america doesn't hold him accountable on this, with our allies and friends, it's a guaranteed assad will do it again. The last 50 years of secretaries of defense would say -- senator, the president is not asking you to go to war. He's not asking you to declare war. Reporter: And secretary kerry was not doing battle with just republicans. Members of the president's own party expressed doubts. History is full of opportunity of moments where someone didn't stand up and act when it made a difference. I don't believe that we should have given up so easily on using the united nations -- we haven't given up. Yes, we have. Reporter: And an odd twist to a long and intense hearing. So long, in fact, that senator john McCain, already onboard with the mill they're strike, was caught playing poker on his iphone in this photo. Posted on a "washington post" blog of the hearing. McCAIN LATER TWEETED SAYING, Scandal, caught playing iphone game at three-plus hour senate hearing. Worst of all, I lost. And after a day of heated debate, it is still unclear how the vote will turn out on the hill. Especially in the house. But the president did get key endorsements from congressional leadership. George?
