coming up but to the major storm now slamming the south set to wallop the east coast again. Ginger heading our extreme weather coverage. All happening in the next two day. Two day, because there's two rounds and using the words like crippling and historic again in parts of Georgia and south Carolina. That's what the national weather service is saying re. Southeast of Atlanta and just into South Carolina, we think three-quarters to 1 inch of ice. That is a lot of ice. When you put it on power lines, when you put it on the roads, this is going to be a paralyzer for sure. We have to go right to Atlanta, though, this morning because Steve osunsami is just in the rain but the rain/snow line just to the north. This is already a messy morning, Steve. Reporter: Good morning, ginger. Authorities here are already reporting sleet and snow on some overpasses and higher elevations Espinosa north of the city, but they are warning this is just the beginning, that ice, they say is coming. This morning, here we go again with the winter storm moving in on the deep south. The sleet and snow starting to hit Alabama and northern Georgia. Families across Atlanta worried sick about being stuck home under the ice went racing to their grocery and hardware stores. Because I have two 8-year-old twins at home and a husband and they all eat a lot. Reporter: This morning stores are out of salt, sand and kitty litter. At this hardware, these were the last two bottles of ice melt walking out the door. And, of course, everybody else runs out, people come from further away, so we run out faster. Reporter: No one here is trying to repeat the disaster of two weeks ago where 2 inches of snow turned highways into demolition derbies. This man will never forget the 11 hours he spent trying to drive home. I just hope that we don't get in the same mess we did last time. Reporter: Georgia's governor roundly criticized for not acting early is all over it this time declaring a state of emergency on Monday way ahead of the storm and holding multiple news conferences including this one on live TV outside the sand and salt depot. We are trying to be ready and prepared and react as quickly as possible. Reporter: The city could get up to 2 inches of snow and a quarter inch of ice. The hard winter has caused a run on salt nationwide. One suburb here says it may have to order from out of state. We have 2 1/2 days' worth which will probably get us through the event however we'll make that move to contact a salt surrender in Charleston, south Carolina. Reporter: The city of Atlanta has 120 pieces of equipment, icing -- de-icing the streets and really blanketing the area. They've told people to stay home and the schools are all closed so people are taking this quite seriously this time. Ginger? Doing it right there in Atlanta and hopefully in south Carolina too. I wanted to time this out for you because everybody wondering when it is it going to affect me? Northern Alabama and north Georgia, that's round one, then tonight and this is where we stop, 6:00 A.M. Tomorrow morning another round, see how Atlanta is right there in the pink. That means freezing rain and sleet and we take it through Wednesday, 6:00 P.M. Is when it really gets going in south Carolina, heavy snow in western North Carolina and from D.C. To New York City on Thursday into early Friday morning for Boston. So coming up I'm going to show you who gets how much snow. It's quite a bit for some folks so don't go anywhere. The winter games could really use some of this. Can't we just ship it over there? There's an idea.
