Transcript for Zimmerman Judge Walks Out on Squabbling Lawyers
We're going to the latest in the george zimmerman trial. After the dramatic hearing last night, the defense expected to wrap up its case today, sending it to the jury by week's end. Abc's matt gutman is covering it all from sanford, florida. Good morning, matt. Reporter: Good morning, george. We haven't seen anything quite like last night's marathon proceedings. Lawyers attacking lawyers. Breaking court protocol. And demanding apologies and coming so close toward the end of this trial, it shows how high the stakes are right now. And how perhaps how personally the lawyers are taking this. Overnight, tensioning boiling over. This information, is opposed to the florida and united states constitution. Reporter: After nearly 13 hours in court, much of it spent spars over what evidence will be admitted today, george zimmerman's attorneys angrily saying the state was withholding information. Spending 100 hours digging it out. Playing games with us. Lying to this court. And now, it's our fault. I would offer him the opportunity to apologize to me, to say I stood by silently with information I did not have. Reporter: The proceedings going so late, the lights went out. Finally, the judge had enough. Court is in recess. Reporter: And even walked out. Much of the night centered on text messages on martin's phone. The defense says it showed martined liked to fight. Prosecution said they are speculative. And they don't want juries to see this 3d animation. Commissioned by the defense. It depicts what jimmerson says happened in the moments before he shot and killed trayvon martin. Zimmerman said the teen pinned him to the ground and pumpked him repeatedly. And he only fired in self-defense. Take pieces of evidence as it exists, and it puts it together in a way that does assist the jury. Reporter: But prosecutors -- this imation and the sub situation -- Reporter: And judge nelson questioned the accuracy of the animation. Judge nelson is schedule to rule on the animation and the text messages this morning. Do jurors want to hear it? They're taking fewer notes. They're asking for fewer breaks, which means they've probably already made up their minds. Matt, thanks very much. Let's bring in dan abram, our chief legal affairs anchor. The judge is trying to get as much done as possible because there's a bunch of jurors sitting in a hotel, away from their families wanting to go home and wanting the trial to end. It's admirable that the judge is taking this late and saying we have to get this going. I think matt brings up an interesting point, about whether the jurors made up their minds. I don't think there's any question that the jurors want to get back and deliberate. They haven't been able to talk about the case with each other. They're itching to get back there and say, all right. Let's start doing this. I get it. I understand what's going on. I've heard all of this evidence. And I think he's right that they have all already made up their minds. Do you think the animation won't be all that critical? I don't think it's going to be a make-or-break issue. In this case. The important thing for the defense is not just to show what happened before or I think they also want to show why a key witness, a neighbor, who says that it was george zimmerman on the bottom, had the best view. They want to show -- I've been to that scene. And I can tell you, where this occurred is directly in front of that neighbor's back porch. And that's one of the things this animation shows, the defense believes it's very helpful to them because this witness was so important to the defense case. Dan abrams, thanks very much.
