friday evening, it was nearly 30 years ago she proclaimed girls just want to have fun. Now, she's back and on broadway, this time, behind the scenes of "kinky boots." And her message this time is far more powerful. Because of it, she's been nominated for far more tonys. "Nightline" anchor cynthia McFADDEN WITH OUR "PERSON OF THE Week." Reporter: Behave. That's hard for the always outrageous cyndi lauper, caught outside the broadway theater where "kinky boots" plays to a packed house every night. ♪ ♪ say yeah yeah ♪ Reporter: What the queens girl is best known for is not broadway, but the anthem she recorded almost 30 years ago. ♪ They just wanna ♪ ♪ oh girls ♪ Reporter: And now she has written a new anthem for new generation about acceptance, of yourself and others. Do you like the feeling of this, being backstage here in a broadway theater? Cyou something? Reporter: Yeah. I traveled the whole world. I'll start to cry, but -- I feel like all I had to do was look in my own backyard. Come on. I'll show you the shoes. They're awesome. Reporter: Look at those. Oh, my gosh. You see what I'm saying? Reporter: Oh, my lord. Right. You want to kill yourself? I do. Reporter: And these are the guys' boots. How beautiful is that shoe? Reporter: Yes, it's a show about drag queens. ♪ lauper knows about being on the outside looking in. They always said I was a loser. And I was no good. And I was a daydreamer and I was stupid. Maybe I talk like a dummy, but I'm not really a dummy. Reporter: Oh, look. This is fabulous. She's as excited backstage as a kid at christmas. Aren't they awesome? Reporter: This woman who has sold a whopping 50 million records. And started fighting for gay and lesbian equality long before most people were paying attention. You're married, have a child, you're not gay. Why did it become an issue for you? My sister is part of that community, which makes me part of that community. And where I come from, you don't stand by and watch your friends and family's civil rights be stripped. Reporter: The charm of "kinky boots" is it seems to speak to everyone. So, what advice does a 59-year-old pop star who is enjoying a whole new kind of success have for the rest of us? You have to keep your sense of humor, trust me.
