Reporter: Four years ago, Bernie Sanders narrowly lost to Hillary Clinton, and now in 2020, the Vermont senator is leading the Iowa poll which more than 20% of the poll say, Sanders is their top pick for president. This morning, Bernie Sanders is on top in Iowa leading the pack in a new Des Moines register poll. I'm absolutely confident if there is a large voter turnout, we are going to win. Reporter: With three weeks to go before the caucuses, this tight race is still up for Pete buttigieg topped the same Iowa poll just a few months ago, but is now jockeying for position in a crowded field choosing not to go after Sanders overnight. Iowa, I believe you are going to make me the nominee, and the next president of the united States. Reporter: But Elizabeth Warren second in that poll, pulling no punches against the Vermont senator responding to a report saying his campaign volunteers are trying to persuade voters that she is a candidate of the elite. I was disappointed to hear that Bernie is sending his volunteers out to trash me. Reporter: Sanders denies any knowledge of the move by his campaign. Have I ever said one bad word about Elizabeth Warren? Reporter: But touting being the front runner, he's making the pitch he's best suited to take down the candidate Democrats want to beat in November. We are the strongest campaign to defeat Donald Trump. Reporter: Sanders has caught the attention of president trump. Over the weekend, president trump tweeted, wow. Crazy Bernie Sanders is surging in the polls looking very good against his opponents in the do nothing party. What does that mean? Stay tuned. He fired back saying, this means you're going to lose.
