As cases of covid-19 skyrocket across the country, experts say wearing the right kind of face mask will be mor important than ever this winter. The type of mask you choose and how you wear it are key. With a tidal wave of covid-19 cases surging, health experts are urging proper mask use during the winter months saying it will be critical. There really is a difference in using a mask to prevent the spread and the catching of covid-19 versus keeping the air warm and keeping our nose and mouth warm. You cannot simply use a scarf to prevent the spread of covid-19. Reporter: While wearing a face covering Der weather may sound convenient and cozy experts say simply using a scarf or sweater material won't keep you safe. In a duke university test of 14 commonly used face coverings -- You see lots of little particles. Reporter: The thin single layer neck gator, popular sporty and wintersory created more tiny droplets than speaking without a mask. These masks breaking down big droplets into multiple little droplets and, of course, these little droplets could be problematic because they have an easier time being carried away by air. Reporter: Dr. Jennifer mose says the best masks are the same ones year round. The way that masks protect us best is if the mask is fitting kind of snugly around the nose and around the side of your face. And you realleed to make sure your mask is at least two years. Reporter: Also crucial in the cold winter months keeping your mask dry. As we have the paper surgical masks when those masks get wet, they need to brown away. For the cloth mask when those get mask they need to be laundered right away. Reporter: Before you head out into the elements be sure to put on your mask fir and put it on snugly then you can put on your gloves, hat, scarf. If you wear eyeglasses choose one with a metal nose strip to keep your glasses from fogging Makes sense.
