Transcript for Principal Arrested for Murder Released From Jail
surprising twist for the california grade school principal released from jail for killing her husband. Reporter: As friends and family gathered to say good-bye to todd chance wednesday, one person was notably absent, his wife of 17 years, janae. I've seen somebody on the verge of tears that's crying. Somebody that's concerned what happened to everybody. Reporter: The elementary school principal was released from jail just hours before she was scheduled to be arraigned tuesday, on charges she murdered her husband. Instead, prosecutors let her go. Saying they're sending the case back for further investigation. Her lawyer says she is innocent. She's not guilty of a crime. She's free to leave or to travel. But her life is here. And she'll be here with her children. Reporter: The vat ran educator was arrested august 29th, SIX DAYS AFTER HER Husband's body was discovered near this orchard. At the time, investigators said they had recovered the murder weapon and had evidence showing chance had pitched todd's car at an intersection 20 miles away. We believe she's the person responsible for shooting him to death. Reporter: Police standing by their investigation. And the d.A. Says chance may still be arrested. At the elementary school disbelief. Staff is in shock. We want them to know they're supported. And whatever they need, we're there for them. Reporter: Chance's daughter tells abc news, we love our dad and can't begin to comprehend what is happening. As friends and family rally behind chance this morning, investigators are back at work, looking for more evidence to prove who killed her husband. Let's get more from abc's chief legal affairs anchor, dan abrams. This is not something you see every day. When the prosecutor says, not enough evidence from the police, and sends it back to the police and says, you keep investigating this. People sometimes forget that the first step is police make an arrest on suspicion of. But then, the d.A. Has to file the charges which say, in effect, we think we can prove this case beyond a reasonable doubt. In this case, the prosecutor is saying, we don't think we can do that yet. But leslie chance not free and clear? Not at all. When the authorities soming out and saying she's the soul suspect, you know they're going to remain focused on her. There's one something that the prosecutors don't feel they have yet. What could that be? It could be motive. If you think about the timeline. They believe she's in the car with her husband, 7:30 in the morning. Drives to this place out in the field. Kills him there. Leaves the body there. Drives the car some miles away, leaves the car there and is seen, allegedly, walking out of the car. They're probably looking for trace evidence, fingerprints, blood, other items that would tie her specifically to the crime. Meantime, she is totally free, able to do anything, including leave the country. Yeah. But they are ch watching her. If she starts heading to an airport, I think the authorities would watch her very closely. We remember in the scott peterson case. He was in san diego, they thought heading to mexico when he was arrested. You see that sometimes. No indication she's going anywhere at this point. But there's no question the authorities are going to have a close eye on her.
