Transcript for Sandra Bullock's 'Bird Box' breaks Netflix record
We're back now with what may be the biggest hit movie of the holiday season and it wasn't even in theaters. Netflix says in just seven days more than 45 million accounts streamed a movie called "Bird box." It's a new thriller starring Sandra bullock. ABC's David Wright is on the story. David, good morning to you. Reporter: Good morning. The holidays are always a big time of year at the box office but this year, couch potatoes have a great excuse to stay at home. You don't Dr. To go to the movies to catch one of the biggest blockbusters. You can stream it right to your living room. Oscar winner Sandra bullock's new thriller has opened a lot of eyes this holiday movie season. In part because "Bird box" debuted not on the big screen but the little one. Netflix says more than 45 million people have watched it during the first seven days since its release. A new record. Fans on social media are happily taking up the "Bird box" challenge. This kid's parents probably not so happy he did. Take it slow. Oh, my god. Reporter: All that fun without ever leaving your living room. Even horror king Stephen king said he was absolutely riveted by the movie. Among the other a-listers to bypass the big screen this year -- I can't be late. This cannot exactly drive itself. Reporter: Jennifer aniston joined the fray as a pageant mom on Netflix. Netflix is also becoming a threat on the award circuit scoring big this season with "Roma," garnering three coveted golden globe nominations but not to worry there's plenty of life left in the big screen which has seen a record-breaking year hauling in 11.9 billion thanks to films like "Aquaman." What could be greater than a king? Reporter: Coming up just around the corner a new installment of "Star wars," godzilla, king of the monsters and "Avengers: End game." So we have to take Netflix's word that 45 million account holders actually watched this movie. But there's no independent confirmation of streaming services but even at that, if you figure a movie ticket costs 10 bucks, 45 million streams is a pretty good opening week. Maybe there were many people in the room. Could be a higher number. And multiple people using the same account. Not that that happens but -- I have a friend -- I can tell you a poll of the newsroom. Everybody was talking about it this morning so clearly striking a chord. Clearly they're not working. But we are.
