of steel. World class surfer maya gaberra cuts through waves like a hot knife through butter. She is searching for bigger swells. We decided to send ginger zee, one of the most fearless members of the "gma" staff -- yeah, she cuts through weather like a hot knife through butter. It was a real wakeup call. I'm not good, is what she's saying. Imagine standing on a building 15 stories tall and then surfing a wave to the base. She holds several world records. I, as you'll see, don't. Plunging into some of the most colossal waves on the planet, she's a brazilian knockout. And a world record-holding surerring named maya. Something that maybe 0.5% of all surfers in the world do. Reporter: It is tow-in surfing. This 26-year-old phenom holds nothing back. She drops in, at least 45 feet high. Terrifying to most. We collaborate on the forecast. You wake up, open this up, and look at computer models. Yes. Reporter: You are a nerd like me. And this morning, conditions are far from perfect. So today, two feet and what -- two to three feet every 15 seconds. 15 seconds. That will be good. That will give me a break. Hopefully, yeah. Reporter: Not like the 40 or 50-foot waves she's used to. Pu okay for a beginner. So this is it. This is it. That's a lot of surfboards, maya. Are surfboards to you like shoes are to other women. I still love my shoes. Every board is for a different day for a different wave, for a -- everyone a same wave by different size, different wind direction. I have a purpose for all of them. Reporter: From fiji to tahiti, her travels take her everywhere. Our playground, man ahattan beach, california. The first few hours, yes, hours, were rough. I don't want to knock my ponytail out. Just when I thought it was impossible. Start paddling. ♪ Reporter: I'm up. Every so briefly. Maya says we can count it. All right. We did it? In my defense, she had trouble surfing that day, too. It was a tough day. She's come back from several injuries over all her travels. I asked her what she would do if she didn't surf, she wants to be a sports broadcaster. I think she would be better that this than I was at her sport. It was 3 1/2 hours we were out there trying. We want to see this shot one more time. I just ke-- I just kept -- it was -- the quickest surfing trip ever. Good job. Thank you, ginger. Known as one of the most
