ABC's Maggie Rulli just back from the fire zone. Reporter: Tonight, the worst wildfires in Australia's history claiming American lives. An air tanker carrying three American firefighters crashing while on a mission. The frantic emergency calls coming in. Fire comms -- message red speak to your captain -- message red -- crashed? Yeah, fire comms. It's just a ball of flames, over. Reporter: The three were on board this massive c-130 Hercules nicknamed "Zeus," battling a fire near canberra. More than 200 American firefighters have deployed to Australia since the fires erupted. At Sydney's airport they were given a heroes welcome. On the fire lines, we met Steve price from Boise, Idaho. It's an honor to come over here and help out aussies. Reporter: The wildfires have killed at least 31 people since September, more than 25 million acres burned. It's believed more than 1 billion animals have tide with countless others left homeless. David, officials are investigating what may have caused this crash, but there were reports of high winds and dust storms in the area. David?
